External Security Threats
Most external security attacks tend to target a few software vulnerabilities. Within those attacks there are two streams, targeted and non-targeted. Targeted attacks take place when an individual seeks to compromise either an individual or an organization. Targeted attacks can take place through a variety of methods including phishing or social engineering to name a couple. While targeted attacks do fall into the scope of external threats and do require remediation. We will narrow our scope for this document to non-targeted attacks. Non-targeted attacks occur when the threat seeks to indiscriminately exploit a vulnerability. Non targeted attacks can be delivered in multiple ways including via a compromised machine spreading to its local network or via a compromised website.
